At the recent World of Concrete 2025 event, Kubota made waves with the unveiling of its latest innovation: the U17-5, the next-generation 1.7-metric-ton mini excavator. Designed with precision and versatility in mind, this compact powerhouse is set to revolutionize the rental market and light construction, utilities, and landscaping industries. The U17-5’s standout features include retractable tracks, a zero-tail-swing design, and an array of new standard enhancements that make it an indispensable tool for operators working in tight spaces.
One of the most notable advancements of the U17-5 is its retractable tracks, which can be hydraulically adjusted to suit various job requirements. The tracks can be narrowed to 39.4 inches for navigating gates and confined areas, while expanding to 51.2 inches for added stability during heavy-duty operations. This flexibility, combined with the zero-tail-swing design, ensures that operators can maneuver effortlessly in tight environments without sacrificing performance. Additionally, the dozer blade retracts and extends in sync with the tracks, and the rear end has been extended by 1.2 inches compared to its predecessor, further enhancing versatility.
The U17-5 is the latest addition to Kubota’s U Series lineup, marking the Dash 5 generation of improvements for its smallest excavators. Larger models in the KX Series have also undergone similar upgrades, with the Dash 5 machines distinguished by their sleek two-tone orange and black color scheme.
During the excavator’s launch at World of Concrete 2025, Bill Holton, Kubota’s product manager for construction equipment, highlighted the U17-5’s enhanced operator comfort and functionality. The cab features a larger interior, a lower noise level, and a semi-suspension seat for improved ergonomics. Operators will also appreciate the repositioned touchscreen monitor, which now sits directly in front of the operator, ensuring better visibility during digging operations.
Another key innovation is the U17-5’s advanced attachment system. The excavator comes with a pre-welded thumb mount at the factory, making it easy to add hydraulic thumb attachments. Additionally, a new diverter valve allows for seamless switching between different attachments without the need for manual replumbing. This feature ensures that operators can quickly adapt to changing job requirements, whether they’re working with buckets, thumbs, or other tools. The system intelligently diverts hydraulic oil flow to the required attachment while keeping the thumb connected.
For added convenience, the U17-5 is equipped with a host of practical features. LED lighting on the boom enhances visibility in low-light conditions, while a pre-wired USB charging port and phone pocket ensure that operators stay connected on the job. The excavator also features KubotaNow telematics, enabling real-time monitoring and diagnostics. A fuel-saving auto-idle feature further enhances efficiency by automatically reducing engine RPM when the controls are inactive for a set period.
Safety is also a priority, with the U17-5 featuring a ROPS canopy complete with operator protection guards and reflective red stripes on the rear for enhanced visibility.
With its cutting-edge design, unmatched versatility, and commitment to operator comfort and efficiency, the Kubota U17-5 mini excavator is poised to become a staple in the construction industry. Whether you’re working in tight spaces, heavy-duty conditions, or anywhere in between, the U17-5 delivers the performance and reliability that Kubota is known for.
